Ohio Board of Nursing: Licensing Renewal Requirements for OH

The Ohio Board of Nursing requires RNs to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education (CE) each licensure period. Reciprocity nurses must complete 12 CE hours. At least one CE hour must relate to Chapter 4723 of the Ohio nurse practice code. CE courses must be offered by Board-approved CE providers. RNs with active licenses need not complete CE for the first renewal.

Registered Nurse

  • The Ohio Board of Nursing requires nurses to complete at least 24 contact hours of CE annually.
  • RNs who hold an active license in another state do not need to complete CE requirements for their first renewal.

  • RNs who renew after September 16 must pay a $50 late processing fee.

CRNA

RNs and CRNAs in Ohio must renew their licenses every two years. In addition, APRNs must satisfy specialty certification agency requirements and complete additional continuing education. Some candidates may qualify to become certified by alternative pathways, such as foreign-trained nurses. They can apply for a training waiver to take a competency exam instead of the NATCEP. Similarly, bedside aides may qualify to take the STNA exam without completing NATCEP.

If your license expires at midnight of an odd-numbered year, you must reapply for approval to practice. If you have a certificate for WHNP, you must complete continuing competency assessment and a specific number of continuing education credits based on your results.
