Kentucky Board of Medicine – License Lookup and Renewal

If you are wondering where to look for a doctor’s license, the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure is the place to go. You can access verified license information, medical school information, years of practice in KY, and past reports on disciplinary actions. This website also provides information about physicians who have gone inactive, as well as Allied Health professionals such as acupuncturists and physician assistants.

Continuing medical education requirements

Continuing medical education (CME) is an ongoing process that doctors and other healthcare professionals must complete in order to maintain their licenses. It takes the form of conferences, workshops, seminars, and other educational activities that promote the profession’s continued development.

To qualify for CME credits:

  • The educational activity must fall within the discipline of clinical medicine or basic medical sciences.
  • In Kentucky, doctors must complete 60 hours of CME every three years. Of these, at least 30 hours must be AMA PRA Category 1(tm) Credit, and the remaining hours can be AMA Category 2 or non-credit categories.
  • Physicians must also take Category I CME in order to maintain their licenses. Category 1 CME must relate to KASPER (Kentucky Safe Prescribing and Education Program) or pain management and addiction disorders.
  • Physicians must complete Category I CME courses within three years of licensure.
  • For physicians who are licensed to prescribe controlled substances, continuing education must consist of 4.5 hours in approved categories of learning.
  • Licensees can get an exemption from the requirement if they haven’t been practicing active professional medicine for at least two years.
  • Licensees who have been out of the profession for more than two years must complete the Special Purpose Examination administered by the Federation of State Medical Boards.
  • If the licensee is not renewing his license, he or she must complete twenty-five hours of continuing medical education and submit documentation of completion within 45 days.
  • If this requirement is not met, the licensee can be subject to disciplinary action.

For Kentucky medical license renewal:

  • Applicants must take at least 60 hours of CME every three years, 30 of which must be AMA Category I.
  • It is important to note that this requirement has been waived in some states, but you must still submit proof of your licenses from those states.
  • Applicants should also take a self-audit report for malpractice payments, as it contains the names of physicians who have undergone disciplinary action or malpractice settlements.

HIV/AIDS course requirements

The Kentucky Board of Nursing (BON) requires nurses to complete at least two hours of approved HIV/AIDS courses. These hours will count towards the required six hours of continuing education (CEU) required for renewal of licensure every three years. The BON requires that nurses complete at least two hours of HIV/AIDS CE.

The BON requires initial licensure applicants to complete two hours of HIV/AIDS education approved by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Requirements vary by licensing board and are based on the most recent medical school curriculum. For example, the BON may require that a physician take HIV/AIDS education every 10 years, although some licensees need to take it more often. To complete the course, the applicants must create an account with TRAIN KY.

The BON also requires physicians to complete two hours of CME in HIV/AIDS every 10 years. In addition, the BON requires physicians to obtain two hours of AMA PRA Category 1 ™ CME credits in domestic violence and HIV/AIDS. In addition, the Kentucky Board of Medicine requires primary care physicians to complete two credits in an approved HIV/AIDS course every 10 years. In Louisiana, physicians must complete a one-time board orientation course.

Continuing education for nurses in Kentucky must meet a number of requirements. LPNs must complete fifteen hours of continuing education every two years, RNs must complete 30 hours, and NPs must complete twenty-four hours every two years. Both RNs and LPNs are required to complete two hours of cultural competency every two years. These requirements are necessary for re-licensure. They also need to meet other continuing education requirements.
